Currently he is working as an agricultural economist at the University of Massachusetts Agriculture Extension Service and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service, speaking to schools around the country, encouraging students to strive for excellence, utilizing the media to spread information. As a Tuskegee Airmen he fought as a pilot in the 332nd Fighter Group and 100th Fighter Squadron in Italy.

Veterans share stories in documentary

The loose sand yielded as Cpl. James ''Jack'' Phillips, shrapnel in his forehead and blinded by blood, tried to get a foothold with his heavy boots.

Below him, Japanese troops crept through the maze of tunnels and bunkers they had dug under Iwo Jima, able to jump out behind groups of Marines and spray them with machine-gun fire.

''We were lying there for three days,'' Phillips said of the 1944 battle.

For Veterans' Voices: Remembering Our Heroes, a new WLRN documentary, which will have its third airing Sunday, Phillips and a group of other World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq vets from Miami-Dade and Broward counties share their memories of boot camp, combat and homecoming with high school students from Miami Edison and Booker T. Washington in Miami and from Cypress Bay in Weston....
